About Us
Greetings, celestial connoisseur!
Permit me, if you will, to introduce a veritable jewel in Western Australia’s cultural crown—the Perth Observatory, a place so bursting with star-strewn splendour it would make Galileo do a double take.
Nestled a refined 35km east of Perth in the picturesque hills of Bickley, this astronomical institution has nobly served the people of WA for over 125 years. Yes, you heard correctly—a century and a quarter of sublime stargazing and scientific service! So esteemed is its legacy that in 2005, it was graciously added to the State’s Heritage Register, a rightful recognition of its scientific, cultural, and historical significance. A round of applause, please.
Should you wish to be whisked away on a cosmic adventure, look no further than our Night Sky Tours. Under the Southern Hemisphere's majestic canopy, our volunteers—distinguished scholars of the stars and thoroughly delightful conversationalists—will escort you through a constellation of wonders: majestic nebulae, the regal planets, dramatic stellar farewells, and gregarious star clusters huddled together in the firmament like schoolchildren on an excursion.
Speaking of which! We also host educational day tours, meticulously crafted to align with the Australian National Curriculum. These are not merely field trips—they are heroic voyages into the minds of young learners, conducted across our historical grounds with structured 30-minute activities that blend astronomy, physics, and the odd gasp of amazement.
And for those of refined tastes in history and artistry, our museum awaits your perusal. Gaze upon meteorites that once roamed the cosmos! Admire the tools of astronomers past! Behold the exquisite Atlas Coelestis, printed in 1729—a work so grand it could only have come from John Flamsteed, Britain’s very first Astronomer Royal.
In short, dear reader, whether you seek the sublime, the scientific, or simply a spot of splendour under the stars, Perth Observatory awaits you with telescopes at the ready and history in abundance.
I implore you—come, experience it for yourself. The cosmos is calling... and it’s positively delightful.

Ah, allow me to introduce you to the fine, upstanding custodians of cosmic curiosity: the Perth Observatory Volunteer Group, affectionately known—by those in the know—as the POVG. This gallant, incorporated ensemble of stargazing stewards was officially launched into the firmament of public service in 1996, offering citizens a golden opportunity to not merely look at the stars, but to actively participate in their majestic telling. By 2002, these stellar scholars had become a formally incorporated body—one assumes with the appropriate celebratory tea and biscuits—thereby enabling them to acquire the pecuniary support of external sources to further their noble astronomical pursuits. Today, the POVG proudly boasts around 160 active members—a brigade of brilliant volunteers who contribute significantly, and with boundless enthusiasm, to the public outreach efforts of the Perth Observatory. From guiding star tours to preserving astronomical heritage, these individuals don’t just support the mission… they embody it.
